1. What Is Selank? The Tuftsin-Derived Heptapeptide You've Never Heard Of
Let's start completely from scratch. A peptide is simply a short chain of amino acids, the same building blocks that make up proteins in your food. Your body already makes thousands of them. A heptapeptide just means it is a chain of exactly seven amino acids. Small, targeted, and biologically active.
Selank was developed by the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Its full chemical name is Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro, and it was designed as a synthetic analogue of a naturally occurring immune peptide called tuftsin. Tuftsin is a fragment of the immunoglobulin protein IgG, and your spleen produces it naturally. Its day job is to activate immune cells, but researchers noticed something interesting: it also appeared to reduce anxiety-like behaviour in animals. Scientists added a stabilising Pro-Gly-Pro sequence to the end of tuftsin to make it more resistant to enzymatic breakdown in the body, and Selank was born.
Selank was approved in Russia as an anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) drug under the brand name Selank by Pharmsynthez, and it has been studied there since the early 2000s. That means we have a legitimate pharmaceutical history and a real body of clinical research, which is more than most peptides can claim. However, most of that research was conducted in Russia and has not yet been replicated widely in Western clinical trials, so we will be clear throughout this article about exactly where each finding sits on the evidence ladder.
An anxiolytic is anything that reduces anxiety. Benzodiazepines like diazepam (Valium) are the most well-known pharmaceutical anxiolytics. The word comes from the Greek "lysis," meaning to loosen or dissolve. An anxiolytic loosens the grip of anxiety on the nervous system.

Studies conducted in Russia showed that Selank administration increased BDNF expression in the hippocampus, the brain region responsible for memory and emotional regulation. This finding is particularly important because it hints at why users report not just feeling calmer, but also thinking more clearly. That said, most of this data is animal-based or from small human trials, so the label here is: preliminary, requires larger independent confirmation.
Immune Crosstalk
Remember tuftsin, the immune peptide Selank was derived from? Its immune roots remain intact. Research from the Zakusov Institute of Pharmacology demonstrated that Selank modulates the expression of interleukins, the signalling molecules your immune system uses to communicate. Specifically, it appears to normalise the balance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory signals in the brain. This matters because chronic inflammation is increasingly recognised as a driver of anxiety and depression, a concept called the neuroimmune hypothesis of mood disorders. Again, this is largely animal and small-cohort human data, so treat it as intriguing rather than established.
3. Selank vs. Benzodiazepines: Anxiolysis Without the Dependency Trap
This comparison deserves honest, careful treatment. Benzodiazepines are genuinely effective at reducing anxiety. A double-blind randomised trial by Neznamov and colleagues published in 2011 compared Selank to the benzodiazepine-like drug medazepam in patients with generalised anxiety disorder. Selank produced comparable reductions in anxiety scores on the Hamilton Anxiety Scale, but without the sedation, cognitive impairment or rebound anxiety seen in the medazepam group. This is genuine human evidence, but the trial was small and conducted by the same institute that developed Selank, which introduces potential bias. Consider it promising but not yet conclusive.

This dual effect is mechanistically plausible because BDNF upregulation directly supports long-term potentiation, which is essentially the cellular process of memory formation.
Neuroplasticity refers to your brain's ability to form new connections and reorganise itself. Think of it like a garden that can grow new paths between flower beds. BDNF is the key growth factor in this process, and the evidence suggesting Selank raises BDNF levels makes it a biologically credible candidate for supporting neuroplasticity. However, this remains largely inferred from animal data and the mechanistic BDNF findings rather than direct neuroimaging evidence in humans.

Most of the cognitive enhancement data for Selank comes from animal studies or small human trials conducted in Russia. This is real science, but it sits at a lower rung of the evidence ladder than large, multi-centre, independently replicated clinical trials. We label it "preliminary human evidence" and "animal data" throughout. Exciting? Yes. Proven beyond doubt in humans? Not yet.
5. Delivery, Dosing Protocols and What Current Research Tells Us About Safety
Selank is most commonly researched and used as an intranasal spray. This is a practical choice for a peptide because the nasal mucosa (the lining of your nose) provides a direct pathway to the brain via the olfactory nerve, allowing the peptide to bypass the gut and reach the central nervous system efficiently. It is also available in injectable form, though the intranasal route is far more commonly referenced in the clinical literature.
The Russian pharmaceutical formulation is a 0.15% solution, and the clinical trials used dosing ranges that produced effects within 15 to 30 minutes of intranasal administration, with effects lasting several hours. We deliberately do not present specific dosing numbers here because dosing is a medical decision, context is everything, and no published human trial has established universally optimal protocols. What the research does show is that effects appear dose-dependent within the studied ranges.
